Sodium thiosulfate

Sodium thiosulfate is a very useful chemical for the refiner when dealing with silver halide. It is also the main ingredient in photographic fixer just because it dissolves unexposed silver halide.

The most common usage in refining is to strip unexposed photographic film and paper of silver.

Sodium thiosulfate can be used for leaching of gold ores. The process is more environmental friendly than cyanide leaching, but high reagent consumption and cost due to thiosulfate oxidation has kept this process from gaining wider usage.
