In a silver assay the amount of silver in a sample is determined. There are many ways to analyze a sample and depending on the source and how precise the result needs to be different methods can be used.

Volhard titration

Volhard titration, a specific method for determining the silver contents of an unknown acidic silver nitrate solution with ammonium thiocyanate and ferric ammonium sulfate as an indicator. The solution turns blood red from iron thiocyanate when all the silver has been turned into silver thiocyanate.
