A precious metal is a metal that doesn't oxidize in our standard atmosphere and also rare enough to command a high price. The metals that are included among precious metals are gold and silver together with the platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium and ruthenium.

Common for all the precious metals are that they are very inert, but that doesn't mean that nothing can affect it. For example gold dissolves in aqua regia and palladium oxidizes in air at 400 °C.
