Beryllium oxide or beryllia is a white ceramic material used in high power devices and microwave components. It resists high temperatures and is a good thermal conductor. Beryllium oxide combines good isolation with good thermal conduction so it is a popular material for high power components.
Beryllium oxide dust is carcinogenic and can cause chronic beryllium disease which is untreatable. Any machining or crushing will create dust so care should be taken when handling beryllium oxide components.
As long as components are not crushed they are safe to handle. Beryllium oxide is not considered to be a hazardous waste in the USA.
